Mini Review: Fables Volumes 16-18

TITLE: Fables: Super Team Related image
VOLUME: 16
RATING: 3/5
SUMMARY: Newly relocated in the Kingdom of Haven, the fables are assembling a team of their own to defeat Mr. Dark.

REVIEW: At first glance I thought Fables was going to introduce new superhero characters, but instead I find that they’re assembling their own group of superheroes and I liked it. I thought it was fun to see Pinocchio trying to build his super team based on all the mundy comics he’s obviously read. Meanwhile, there’s something brewing in castle dark and I wonder how that storyline will play out in the later comics. Although I enjoyed the volume, the ending was disappointing and rather anticlimactic, if that really is the end.

TITLE: Fables: Inherit the Wind
VOLUME: 17
RATING: 4/5
SUMMARY: With the North Wind gone, it’s time to choose the new North Wind from Snow and Bigby’s pack of cubs.

REVIEW: Since the start of the Fables comics I have always loved Snow and Bigby’s storylines and missed them when they were pushed off to the side, so I’m so happy to see the comics are coming back to focus on their family. This particular volume felt like it was setting up a bigger plot line for later comics, and I can’t wait to see how it will affect the story. The only part I don’t quite understand is Buffkin’s storyline because I have no idea what the point of it is by the end of this volume. Other than that I really enjoyed this volume.

TITLE: Fables: Cubs in ToylandImage result for cubs in toyland
VOLUME: 18
RATING: 4.5/5
SUMMARY: When Therese befriends a toy boat, she’s taken to Toyland and becomes a queen.

REVIEW: It’s been a while since I’ve rated a Fables volume this high probably since Volume 4: March of the Wooden Soldiers (and it weren’t for the extra issues that do not move the main story along, I would have given this a 5/5). This volume continues focusing on Snow and Bigby’s kids, specifically Therese and Darien, but this storyline is so much darker than I expected it to be. Let’s face it, anything with talking broken toys is creepy, but this is nothing like Toy Story 3. When I say this is dark, it is very dark! Perhaps, that’s why I liked it because the stakes were so high and unexpected. I’ll definitely continue to read the series, especially with an ending like that.
