Top 5 Wednesday: Fantasy and Sci-Fi in Other Types of Media

Favorite Science Fiction & Fantasy in Other Media – Booktube SFF Awards Babbles Crossover Topic!
— This month’s babbles crossover topic involves our favorite SFF outside of books (like movies, tv shows, games, anime, etc.)

As a challenge to myself, I will be naming at least one title for each media category mentioned in the prompt; movie, TV show, game, and anime or cartoon.

In Your Eyes

A movie that’s half science fiction and half romance? Sign me up please! Ok, maybe not always, but this movie is so endearingly sweet and cute that I have to have watch it every once in a while.

The story follows two different people, a man and a woman, living on two ends of the United States. They have this weird psychic connection between them that allows them to feel, see, and hear what each one is thinking. Through this connection they form the best long distance relationship ever depicted on film (I’m exaggerating).

Black Mirror

I cannot have a list about science fiction media and not include Netflix’s masterpiece called Black Mirror. I am obsessed with this show and how incredible it is. I understand it’s not for everyone but I love the way they take technology to the next level while also commenting on our society’s obsession with it too.

The OA

I could have mentioned Stranger Things, maybe I should have, but I feel that The OA hasn’t received the recognition it deserves, so I’m going to put it on my lists until I see that happening. I will say that if you liked Stranger Things, then you will like The OA. It has alternate dimensions, people travel between the two, Prairie is practically Eleven, there’s a group of misfits, and I’m waiting impatiently for the next season.

P.S. If you’re missing Hershel from The Walking Dead, I found him on this show.

The Walking Dead Game

I haven’t actually played this game but I have watched other people play it on YouTube. I like it so much I’ve watched the same person play it at least three times now. It’s like watching a TV show with the player’s commentary.

It starts with Lee Everett a convict who finds himself in charge of a little girl, Clementine, in the midst of the zombie apocalypse. He helps her by protecting her and teaching her how defend herself as they travel through Georgia to find her parents in Savannah.

Voltron: Legendary Defender

I tried really hard to not to mention Avatar: the Last Airbender because I mention it in almost every list. I guess this is me failing.

Anyway, Voltron: Legendary Defender is a Netflix series and reboot of the original 80s cartoon show. It is produced by the same people who worked on Avatar: the Last Airbender and Legend of Korra. The animation style is similar but the story is completely different. If you like giant lion robots, space, aliens, and a rag tag team of teens working together to save the universe, then I highly recommend watching this show.
